Netflix is an entertainment company that was founded in 1997. It started as a DVD by mail service, before transitioning to video on demand. Since moving to video streaming, Netflix has grown in popularity worldwide. Over 98 million people worldwide pay a monthly subscription to access movies and series through Netflix. Netflix offers a range of TV series and movies in its catalog, with the range differing between countries. Due to different licensing rights, some Netflix users can see more options than other users elsewhere in the world. In 2013, Netflix started producing their own original shows, marketed as Netflix Original. Netflix Original started with the House of Cards, which became a popular series. The Netflix Original productions expanded with more series and even movies. Many of the Netflix Original productions have been nominated for awards across a range of categories. You can have up to five individual profiles per membership. This allows users to get their own personalized recommendations, recently watched and preferences. These profiles are best used for households that use a single login. Netflix can be watched on mobile, tablet, gaming consoles, and online. Content can also be streamed to other devices, like Chromecast or Apple TV. Some modern TVs have built-in support for Netflix without requiring a separate device. An active subscription is still required to view content. You can watch on up to four devices at the same time, with HD quality content when available. Netflix comes with a 30-day free trial, and a small monthly fee to continue enjoying content after the trial period. You can choose to cancel your subscription at any time, with no cancellation fees.
ROBLOX is a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) social gaming platform. The majority of the content within the game is user generated content, both shop items, and mini games. Users can create virtual worlds within the ROBLOX universe to create their own games. This is possible through the game's capabilities to support this content through their own developer tools. ROBLOX - a portmanteau of "robots" and "blocks" - launched in 2004. The website for the game was launched two years later in 2006. The website allows players to join games, or buy cosmetic items for their in-game avatar. Many things within the game and on the website can be purchased with Robux, the in-game currency. Robux can be earned through normal gameplay, or purchased in exchange for real money. ROBLOX offers a range of activities players can take part in. Such activities include, exploring, crafting items, gathering resources, or combat. Players can also customize their avatar - their representation in the game world. Customization options are available for the player's avatar. Various body styles and clothing can be selected - some which are exclusive to the game's store. Players can create items to sell in-game - these require Builder's Club. Builder's Club is a subscription service that allows players to create content for ROBLOX. These are typically mini games, but can also include items and clothing. ROBLOX has more than 5.4 million games available created by players. There is also 30+ million active users each month, with ~900,000 concurrent users being online at any time.
Pokemon Go is a free-to-play, location-based augmented reality (AR) game. It grew to massive success at its July 2016 launch, reaching the #1 spot in app stores for both Android and iOS. The game did run in to issues early in its release due to the popularity of the app as it rolled out to more countries. The game's characters are based on the popular children TV series Pokemon. Other Pokemon games are available on Nintendo devices, like the Nintendo 3DS. The aim of Pokemon Go puts the focus on your current location. By moving around in real-time, you are able to find nearby wild Pokemon that you can then capture. Special icons on the map show areas of interest for Pokemon Go players: PokeStops and gyms. PokeStops allow you to gain items, such as potions, berries and PokeBalls. You can also get eggs that when incubated can hatch in to a Pokemon. Eggs need you to walk a certain distance to hatch, ranging from 1–10 kilometers (0.62–6.2 miles). Pokemon Gyms are not like gyms from more traditional Pokemon games. Instead, you represent one of three teams - Valor, Mystic, and Instinct - which can then own the gym. While you have a Pokemon in your team's gym, it can earn rewards to make your Pokemon stronger. Defeating an opposing team gym's leader allows you to take over that gym for your team. More features and new Pokemon are added in regular updates. Pokemon trading, player vs. player battles, and Pokemon Centers are currently in development. Niantic has not provided any specific dates on when these will be released.
Map travel app, Google Maps, helps you navigate the streets of the world for free. Developed by Google, Google Maps takes the benefits of the website service and puts it in the palm of your hands. The app includes directions, public transport routes, and more. You can search for directions to local businesses, bars, and restaurants. Selecting a destination presents the option to receive directions based on your mode of transport. You can select from walking, biking, public transport, or vehicle. Through these options, you can then chose one or more directions. Estimated travel times also help you prepare estimated times to leave and arrive. Google Maps has schedules for public transport for over 15,000 cities around the world. Some places may also include indoor maps, such as airports, malls, and stadiums. This feature is still rolling out and may not be available in all countries. Google Maps became a separate app on iPhone with the release of iOS 6 in 2012. Up until then, Apple had been using Google Maps to power their built-in app. The switch from Google Maps to Apple's own in-house service caused several issues. The quality of the app and directions were often off, and some destinations, like airports and stadiums, were located elsewhere. As part of the service, Google Maps includes real-time updates along your route. Such updates can include traffic conditions, and lane guidance to make sure you have the right exit. It is with this that Google Maps is one of the most affordable GPS devices on the market.
The Google app brings Google Search in a format made for mobile. You can search the web for anything, right from the palm of your hand. And like the website, it is all free to use. The Google app does more than search the web for information. It can also assist you in setting reminders, sending texts and emails, and making calls. Other handy features include weather updates, and transit timetables. Also, you can find your boarding passes, get package tracking updates, and event tickets. Some of these features are not available in all countries. The mobile app from Google acts in many ways more like a personal assistant than a simple search app. The power Google has behind the app shows a great attention to detail. What you know Google search for, is likely doable within the app as well. It also includes handy tools like a tip calculator, currency conversions, or check business hours. Get the search tools you need on your mobile. The Google app is free to download, and will likely be an app you use often.
